12AT7 - ECC81 - ECC801S - E81CC - CV492 - 6679 - 6057 - M8162- 6201 -CV4024 - CV455 - A2900 - B739 12AT7 = high-frequency dual triode vacuum tube. 9-pin miniature glass vacuum tube, mu factor of 60, higher gain 12AX7 has a factor of 100, whereas 12AU7, is only 20. Similar pin connections with other 12A_7 types, but usually not interchangeable. The 12AT7 is used in many hi-fi applications, as each triode operates as a class A amplifier. Low noise, making them a great for hifi, guitar amplifier, and other audio applications.
Descriptions of 12at7 Vacuum tube types and variants:
ECC81:European designation of the 12AT7. Great tubes, on par with RCA blackplate or other USA made military/industrial versions. Often rebranded european versions were made for USA hi-fi products in the 1960s (Knight, Bogen, Daystrom, Dynascan, etc.) These are all excellent sounding vacuum tubes made by Mullard, Amperex or Telefunken. The rarest are the 1950s versions of Mullard and Amperex with a "D" shaped top getter often rival the scarce A2900 (see below).E81CC or ECC801S:Extremely rare vacuum tubes, these are usually found only in the Telefunken or Siemens or Philips brand. Special screening was used to select them for audio use and low noise, and they have a 10,000 hour heater. The ECC801S Telefunken is the rarest, and the E81CC only a little more common. Both are excellent, low noise, finely crafted tubes. Very rare and sound amazing!
E180CC or 7062:Almost always made by Amperex or Philips, it is basically the same as a 5965 and has the added advantage of a 10,000 hour heater life to make it another audiophile vacuum tube. Musical and smooth, and actually sound better than many standard 12AT7 tubes. Thge pinched waist version is quite rare. This tube is about a half-inch taller than the standard 12AT7, so please measure your chassis to make sure they fit.
CV455 and CV4024 and M8162:UK military vacuum tube designations from the 1950's, 1960s and early 1970s. Mullard, Brimar, and some GEC are available. Often the tubes will have both the military and commercial vacuum tube numbers on it. These are all ruggedized, and have that sweet rich British tube sound which sounds great in reverb units. The majority of the Mullard military tubes were made at the Mitcham, UK factory.A2900:Rarer than Rare! A2900 is in the "Gold Monarch" series by Genalex. Genalex GEC and Marconi-Osram Company in England made these. It has wide, flat black plates and underscore, and and huge soundstage! Audiophile vacuum tubes, tightly controlled noise specs, designed with audio listening. Very scarce! Rarer than hen's teeth. Did we say these were RARE?
12AT7:This is the USA made version of this tube. Almost all have wing shaped plates. Earlier versions have black carbonized plates, with later versions have greyplates. Most have top getters, which are square or D shaped. USA made vacuum tubes are great tubes, and some of the best(like the RCA blackplates) are as good or better than the military and industrial versions. Selected versions of this tube made by large manufacturers like RCA, GE and Sylvania, are usually branded with the OEM product they were selected for. For example, organ brands are found with Baldwin, Wurlitzer, and Conn labels. Sometimes McIntosh hi-fi and Fender guitar amps had select tubes made for them. Often the tips of these tubes are painted indicating they have been screened for low noise!
12AT7WA:Military version of this vacuum tube, and the military number for the tube is a 6201. Some tubes may have both type numbers silk screened on them. The thickness of the mica spacers is usually greater and the filaments are ruggedized. RCA versions have extra support posts, small "12AX7" type plates, and are almost always black. These are great for Fender amps as a reverb driver as they are very low in microphonics.
6201:Usually appears along with 12AT7WA designation (military version) on the same vacuum tube. However, some tube makers made a the commercial versions of a 6201 as an "industrial" 12AT7. Sylvania made a 6201 vacuum tube in their Gold Brand line, and it came in gold boxes, gold silk screen on the glass, and most had gold plated pins. Amperex's PQ version of the 6201, also known as a E81CC with gold pins usually made in Germany or Holland.. Earlier USA made 6201 as well as the european made 6201 vacuum tubes, often have an extra mica spacer on top. These are also known as "triple mica", and are usually very quiet and well suited for hifi audio applications. Overall, the 6201 is a huge upgrade over a standard 12AT7, and were designed to meet military specs with critical applications. 6211:A less common vacuum tube, this is a class A amplifier twin triode with medium mu; lower gain than the typical 12AT7, even lower than even the 5965 (see below). It usually has larger, flat plates with diamond shaped points at the corners bent inwards. This construction adds rigidity to the plate structure. This vacuum tube is slightly lower in plate voltage and current ratings, but is still very usable in hi-fi stereos.Often used in preamp circuits with lower gain, lower microphonics, and mellow sound. Somewhat uncommon but this medium-mu tube sounds very good in place of the standard 12AT7. Great for making the gain on a guitar amp more usable or eliminating harshness in your stereo system.
5965:An ndustrial tube with a mu of 47 compared to 60 of a 12AT7. Low noise and lower gain and can be used in a similar way like using a 5751 in place of a 12AX7. GE, RCA and other USA manufacturers made very nice versions of this tube. Some are "triple mica" and noted for lower microphonics. Telefunken also made a version of this tube with long plates which are rare.6829:An industrial vacuum tube that is similar to the 5965. It has a mu factor of 47 so it is slightly lower than the typical 12AT7and is rich, detailed, warm, and very quiet, low in microphonics. The GE version ( 5-star and military line) are a rugged and long lasting vacuum tube. Half-inch taller than the 12AT7, like the E180CC listed above.6679:Super high quality 12AT7 often with gold pins and were designed for mobile communications use. It maintains output levels even when filament voltage varies. Somewhat rare and they work great in hi-fi use.7728:SUPER RARE! High-end industrial tube made by CBS or Hytron (same factory made both) with gold pins sometimes rebranded as Raytheon.Suggestions on our best sounding IN STOCK 12at7 vacuum tubes to buy now :
